A local girl Rukmani Riar, 24, has bagged second position in civil services exam-2011 conducted by the Union Public Services Commission.
Rukmini Riar at Hoshiarpur. Belonging to a family of landlords of Gurdaspur district, her father Baljinder Singh Riar retired as Deputy District Attorney of Hoshiarpur. Rukimini did her schooling from Sacred Heart School at Dalhousie in Himachal Pradesh and her graduation from Guru Nanak Dev University at Amritsar. The only child of her parents, her mother Takdeer Kaur is a housewife.

The result of mains exams held in 2011 as well as interviews held for personality test in March-April 2012 was declared by UPSC today. A total of
910 candidates have been recommended for appointment in different civil services by the UPSC.
A gold medalist post graduate in social sciences from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Rukmaani cleared the coveted exam in her maiden attempt. Her father is Hoshiarpur-based advocate Baljinder Pal Singh Riar.
"Self study has been the key to her success and she was determined to join civil services. That's why she chose social sciences as her field of study," said a jubilant Baljinder Pal Singh Riar, a former district attorney.
"We too were assured of her success as she is determined and hardworking from the beginning. It is a proud moment for all family members. One thing she must be missing for sure is a gold medal this time," said Tadbir Riar, her housewife mother.
The second ranker is Rukmani Riar, who has done Master of Arts (Social Entrepreneurship) from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. She cleared the exam in her first attempt.

She cleared the tough exam in her first attempt and grabbed the second position.
Rukmani, hailing from Punjab's Hoshiarpur, has brought laurels to her family. "Her hard work and the blessings of god helped her succeed in the exam," her father G.S. Riar said.
The 25-year-old studied at Chandigarh's New Public School before shifting to Sacred Heart School in Dalhousie. She graduated in BSc (honours) from Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) in Amritsar.
Rukmani then studied social entrepreneurship at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai. She is a merit certificate holder for outstanding academic performance throughout her school years.
She was also awarded a dual honours degree in political science and sociology and presented a gold medal at GNDU for securing the first position all three years in the university.
Among her achievements is penning down awareness papers such as 'Struggle with Reality: Women and their working conditions' and 'Skewed Sex Ratio in India: a cause of immediate concern'.
Rukmani intends to help the needy and being a part of the civil services would make that possible for her. "It is a dream come true," she said.
